The Akathistos Hymn in honor of the Mother of God

Among the thousands of hymns attributed to St. Romanus, the Melodist of Constantinople, the AKATHISTOS was without doubt the most successful. Composed for liturgical use, c. 530, it must have entered at once into the life of monasteries and convents; at least of some of them.

On August 7, 626, after the great liberation of Constantinople, Patriarch Sergius chose it as a Hymn of Thanksgiving to the Mother of God, the Theotokos, adding the prelude in which is an allusion to Mary’s part in the remarkable victory. It was moreover precisely on this occasion that Romanus’s Hymn, composed for the feast of the Annunciation, became the AKATHISTOS, it was sung “standing” by the clergy and the faithful.

After a second miraculous liberation of Constantinople in 717-718, Romanus’s Hymn, already the AKATHISTOS, was again chosen by the Patriarch St. Germanus of Constantinople, the founder of the Feast of the AKATHISTOS, on the Saturday of the 5th week in Lent.

In the eighth century a beautiful “Canon” composed of nine odes by Joseph the Hymnographer was added to Romanus’s Hymn.

The Akathistos Hymn

The Akathistos is the most famous of all surviving Byzantine kontakia. This work, which celebrates the annunciation of the Virgin and the nativity of Christ, consists of two prooemia (introductory hymns) and 24 strophes bound by an alphabetic acrostic.

The Akathistos (Greek: “not seated”) was, and still is, performed while the congregation stands. The even-numbered stanzas carry an alleluia refrain, whereas the odd-numbered oikoi include a set of Salutations to the Virgin: 12 lines in metrically matching pairs, each line beginning with “Hail!” Each oikos ends with the refrain “Hail, Bride Unwedded!”

Metrically, this poem is unique, as its central part is formed of alternating strophes of two different lengths. The texts of the first 12 oikoi elaborate on the incarnation and the infancy of Christ, whereas the last 12 alternate praise of God with praises to the Virgin. The whole coalesces to create a subtly interwoven tapestry of images that is one of the high points of Byzantine poetry.

Like most Byzantine kontakia, the Akathistos draws extensively on the Scriptures and on a number of famous prose sermons, but it retains a striking individuality. With bold similes the poet succeeds in blending the overwhelming mystery of the incarnation of the Word with the softer note of praise to Mary; the varied and intricate rhythms employed are enhanced by the music of the words.

The Akathistos was originally a chant for the Feast of the Annunciation (March 25), but is now sung at the vigil of the fifth Saturday in Great Lent. According to the Synaxarion, it was chosen by Patriarch Sergius as the thanksgiving hymn to the Mother of God for saving the city of Constantinople from the Avars in 626. The entire work was thus turned into a hymn of victory and deliverance, and it is repeatedly used as such to this day.

Priest: Curious to know knowledge what is knowable to no one, the Virgin cried out to the ministering angel: How is it possible for a son to be born of pure loins? Tell me. To whom the angel answered in fear, crying out:

Rejoice, introduction to Christ’s miracles;

Rejoice, consummation of his doctrinal articles.

Rejoice, heavenly ladder by which God came down;

Priest: Present below completely but in no way absent from on high was the uncircumscribable Logos. For this was divine condescension and not a change of place. He was born of a God-chosen virgin who heard this that follows:

Rejoice, unequivocal boast of the faithful.

Rejoice, all-holy vehicle of Him who rides the Cherubim;

Priest: All Angels were quite amazed by the great deed of Your incarnation. For they beheld the once inaccessible God accessible to all as- a man living among us, while hearing from everyone: Alleluia.

Priest: Eloquent rhetors we see mute as fish before you O Theotokos. For they are at a loss to explain how you had the power to give birth and yet remained a virgin. But we the faithful marveling at the mystery cry out with faith:

Rejoice, revealer of philosophers as fools;

Rejoice, exposer of the technologists as irrational.

Rejoice, for the fierce debaters are made foolish;

Priest: Theotokos and Virgin, you are the fortress for virgins and for all who run to you for refuge. O immaculate Maiden, for the Creator of heaven and earth prepared you, inhabiting your womb and instructing all to address you thus;
