The Journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem

By today’s standards, walking from Nazareth to Bethlehem would take approximately 34 hours to cover a distance of about 145 kilometers. Yet, in the time of Christ’s birth, time and travel had a very different meaning.

According to the Gospel of Luke (2:1–5), Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem because of the census ordered by Caesar Augustus. This decree required every man to return to his ancestral town to be registered there. Thus Joseph, a descendant of David, took Mary and set out for the small town of Bethlehem, the “City of David,” where Christ would ultimately be born.

Historians estimate that the journey—around 145 kilometers in total—would have taken four to seven days, depending on the stops and conditions of the time. Many scholars believe that Joseph and Mary followed the caravan route running east of the Jordan River, through the region of Perea, in order to avoid the mountainous area of Samaria, which was not considered safe for Jewish travelers. From there, passing through Jericho, they would have ascended westward toward the hills of Jerusalem and then onward to Bethlehem.

The route included fertile valleys as well as arid stretches that made the journey more demanding. The travelers likely stopped at places such as Scythopolis (Beth-Shean), a city rich in water sources near the Jordan, or at the passes of Jabesh (near ancient Gadara, modern Umm Qais in Jordan). Along the route through Perea, small encampments were commonly used near the Jordan River, in locations such as Tell el-Hammam—an area known for its crossings and wells.

Caravans of that era avoided the dry western regions, following natural valleys and passes until they reached Jericho, which served as an essential stop before the strenuous ascent to Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

It is along this same road that Jesus Himself would later walk many times, traveling from Galilee to Jerusalem—sometimes passing through Samaria, and at other times retracing the very path once taken by Joseph and Mary.
